2022 Scholarship Recipients

Join us in congratulating this year's GHDS Foundation Scholarship Recipients. They are Mary Younan and Ali Mahmood Shakir Al Hatem, who are third-year dental students from the University of Texas School of Dentistry-Houston.

In 2014, GHDS Past President and UTSD-Houston Faculty Dr. Joe Piazza realized a dream of giving scholarships to third year dental students. The GHDS Board of Directors had supported the idea and approved the GHDS Scholarship award, to be accomplished on an annual basis.  Dr. Piazza appointed a GHDS Foundation Board who created a process for Scholarship awards which has been honed and perfected to a very smooth system.

Dr. Piazza had another dream -- to create a separate foundation that would allow donors to give to the scholarship fund through a 501(c)(3) organization, allowing those donations to be tax-deductible, which would encourage even more support. As of 2019, the GHDS Foundation was awarded 501(c)(3) status by the Internal Revenue Service.

To date, we have awarded a total of eight $2,500 scholarships to third year dental students. The GHDS Foundation is excited about the prospect of being able to provide more scholarship support to our local dental students which can be accomplished through increased donations of active GHDS member support.
